MacKinnon, Hellebuyck and Marchand Earn Honors

Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon, Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck and Boston Bruins left wing Brad Marchand have been named the NHL’s “Three Stars” for the week ending Jan. 21.

FIRST STAR – NATHAN MacKINNON, C, COLORADO AVALANCHE

MacKinnon registered 4-2—6, including a pair of game-winning goals, in three contests to power the Avalanche(26-16-3, 55 points) to a perfect week and their ninth straight victory, the longest such streak in the NHL this season. He scored the decisive goal in a 3-1 triumph over the Anaheim Ducks Jan. 15. MacKinnon then posted 2‑1—3, his eighth three-point performance of the season, in a 5-3 victory against the San Jose Sharks Jan. 18. He closed the week with 1-1—2, including the winning goal, in a 3-1 triumph over the New York Rangers Jan. 20. The 22-year-old Halifax, N.S., native – who will make his second All-Star Game appearance this week – shares the League lead with seven game-winning goals and ranks second overall with 23-36—59 in 45 outings this season. That includes an NHL-best 15-16—31 in 22 contests since the start of December, highlighted by points in all nine games during Colorado’s current winning streak (8-11—19) and goals in five straight (6-4—10).

SECOND STAR – CONNOR HELLEBUYCK, G, WINNIPEG JETS

Hellebuyck stopped 59 of 60 shots against, compiling a 2-0-0 record with a 0.48 goals-against average, .983 save percentage and one shutout to lift the Jets (28-13-7, 63 points) back atop the Central Division standings. He made 30 saves through overtime and denied both shootout attempts he faced in a 2-1 victory against the Calgary Flames Jan. 20. Hellebuyck then earned his 10th career shutout with 29 saves in a 1-0 triumph over the Vancouver Canucks Jan. 21. The 24-year-old Commerce, Mich., native – who will make his All-Star Game debut this week – ranks in the top 10 in the NHL this season in wins (2nd; 25), shutouts (t-2nd; 4), goals-against average (7th; 2.29) and save percentage (7th; .926) through 39 appearances. That includes a League-best 17 victories in 20 outings on home ice (17-1-1, 2.06 GAA, .931 SV%, 3 SO).

THIRD STAR – BRAD MARCHAND, LW, BOSTON BRUINS

Marchand led the NHL with 2-5—7 in four games to guide the Bruins (27-10-8, 62 points) to a 3-0-1 week, helping the team extend its point streak to 16 contests dating to Dec. 16 (12-0-4). After being held off the scoresheet in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Dallas Stars Jan. 15, Marchand bounced back with three straight multi-point outings: 1‑1—2 in a 4-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens Jan. 17, 1-2—3 in a 5-2 win against the New York Islanders Jan. 18 and 0-2—2 in a 4-1 triumph over the Canadiens Jan. 20. The 29-year-old Halifax, N.S., native – who will play in his second All-Star Game this week – shares the League lead with a +24 rating through 37 contests this season. He also paces Boston with 20-28—48, marking his seventh 20-goal campaign.

Sens Look to Surprise Wild – DFS GAMEPLAN 1/22/18

A heavy Monday schedule for the NHL with six games scheduled. Colorado is in Toronto looking to continue their streak – I think it ends tonight in a low scorer. I like Ottawa in Minnesota. It is one of those nights that the Sens will put up some points. I would be very aware of the Buffalo at Calgary game. I think it will be low scoring. That will be a surprise to many, but I think Calgary will sputter coming off break. Look for a Lightning explosion tonight.

MACKINNON, AVALANCHE KEEP ROLLING WITH NINTH STRAIGHT WIN

Nathan MacKinnon (1-1—2) scored for the fifth straight game – a career-high run that includes three game-winners – to lead the Avalanche to their ninth consecutive victory, the longest win streak in the NHL this season. Colorado’s win streak is tied for the second-longest in franchise history.

MacKinnon leads all players in goals and points (tied) since the beginning of December (15-16—31 in 22 GP), including 8-11—19 on his active nine-game point streak. Mikko Rantanen (1-1—2) recorded his second straight multi-point game to push his 2017-18 totals to 17-29—46 (45 GP), an average of 1.02 points per game.  * Jonathan Bernier (27 saves) extended his career-high win streak to eight games (1.47 GAA, .958 SV%, 1 SO) to move within one victory of matching the longest win streak by a goaltender in 2017-18 (Andrei Vasilevskiy: 9-0-0 from Oct. 9-30 w/ TBL).

Bernier became just the fourth goaltender in Avalanche/Nordiques franchise history to record at least eight consecutive wins. The others: Patrick Roy in 1998-99 (11-0-0), Stephane Fiset in 1995-96 (9-0-0) and Jocelyn Thibault in 1994-95 (8-0-0).

BRUINS EXTEND POINT STREAK TO 16 GAMES

David Pastrnak collected 2-1—3 to reach the 20-goal mark for the second straight season and help the Bruins (27-10-8, 62 points) extend their point streak to 16 games (12-0-4) and move within three points of the Lightning (31-12-3, 65 points) for first place in the NHL.

This marks the eighth time in franchise history that the Bruins have recorded one or more points in at least 16 consecutive games – and second time in the past five seasons (also 16 GP in 2013-14).

Tuukka Rask (22 saves) improved to 14-0-2 in his last 16 decisions dating to Nov. 29 (1.61 GAA, .940 SV%, 2 SO), extending the longest such point streak of his NHL career.

Canadien Teams Highlight Hockey Day in Canada – DFS GAMEPLAN 1/20/18

It is a special day. It is Hockey Day in Canada and all seven Canadien teams are in action. Thirteen games with 9 factoring in on the Draftkings Saturday night matches. It is a emotional and fantastic day in Canada and that brings out the best in Canadiens. I like Edmonton today, and I look for Brock Boeser to rebound from three pointless games. It is a day to celebrate and win some money.
