 ‘SOUL ON ICE’ TO PREMIERE IN THE U.S.

SLATE OF EVENTS IN SUPPORT OF HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE PROGRAMS

Soul On Ice: Past, Present and Future U.S. Film Premiere

In Washington, D.C., tonight, the NHL and Washington Capitals will co-host the U.S. premiere of Soul On Ice: Past, Present, and Future. The film tells the stories of the contributions of black hockey players throughout history. Former NHL players who helped pave the way, today’s stars and future heroes are featured in the film including: Willie O’Ree, who on Jan. 18, 1958 became the first black player in the NHL; Anson Carter, Trevor Daley; Grant Fuhr; Mike Marson; Tony McKegney; Wayne Simmonds, Joel Ward and Kevin Weekes. The film won the Audience Choice: Documentary Feature award at the 2015 Edmonton International Film Festival. Click here to watch the trailer. Tonight’s event includes a panel discussion with Commissioner Gary Bettman, Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis, and director Damon Kwame Mason, as well as a panel discussion with O’Ree, Carter and Weekes.

 NHL/Thurgood Marshall College Fund Scholarship

On Tuesday, Jan. 19, applications for the NHL/TMCF scholarship, an academic scholarship awarded to outstanding youth hockey players, will become available. The program is open to participants in the League’s Hockey Is For Everyone™ nonprofit organizations, which provides support to local youth hockey organizations across North America. Each organization is committed to providing youth from all backgrounds the opportunity to play hockey, learn essential life skills, and the core values of hockey: commitment, perseverance, and teamwork. The 2016 scholarship recipients will be named in March at the Hockey Day on the Hill event at Capitol Hill. Further information is available at http://www.thurgoodmarshallfund.org .

Hockey Day on the Hill

On Wednesday, Mar. 2, 2016 on Capitol Hill, the League will participate in Hockey Day on the Hill, a panel discussion on the state of hockey in the U.S. Previous discussions included how hockey can assist injured veterans, and the importance of higher education.

8th Annual Congressional Hockey Challenge

On Wednesday, Mar. 2, at 6:30 p.m. ET the 8th annual Congressional Hockey Challenge (CHC) will take place at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex, practice facility of the Washington Capitals, in Arlington, Va. The CHC is a friendly hockey game in which U.S. and Canadian lawmakers, alongside Congressional staff and Administration officials, face off against lobbyists. The game raises funds for three grassroots hockey initiatives: the Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Club in Washington, D.C., an organization part of Hockey Is For Everyone™ which provides local youth with the skills and coaching necessary for discipline on and off the ice; the USA Warriors Ice Hockey Program, a recreational and therapeutic club for U.S. war veterans injured on duty; and the NHL/Thurgood Marshall College Fund Scholarship.

Willie O’Ree All-Star Skills Weekend

On March 4-6 in Philadelphia, the Willie O’Ree All-Star Skills Weekend will take place. Hosted in partnership with the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation, a member of the League’s Hockey Is For Everyone™ program, the weekend includes an on-ice clinic and skills events. The Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation, currently in its 10th year, provides full equipment, ice time and coaching to more than 3,000 youth (ages 5-19) around Philadelphia.
