In a year in which there was not a lot of hope in Philadelphia, rookie defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere has been a breath of fresh air. The offensively minded 22-year-old defenseman has been a point-scoring machine. Gostisbehere was called up from the minors in November, and he has not looked back since.

For much of the year Gostisbehere has not been a part of Calder Trophy conversations. With names such as Connor McDavid, Artemi Panarin, and Dylan Larkin, a defenseman from Philadelphia has often been left out of the conversation. Although he has only played 37 games his 31 points while playing defense has recently vaulted him into the Calder conversation.

With scoring in the NHL on pace for an all-time low mark. Gostisbehere’s 10 goals, 21 assists for 31 points has him on pace for one of the best seasons by a rookie defenseman ever. If he continues to score at the pace he will end the regular season with 53 points. That is amazing for any defenseman much less a rookie.

Gostisbehere is a offensive defenseman that will be a force to reckon with for years, and is most definitely a true Calder Trophy candidate.
