It was like many others for the Rangers during this year’s playoff run, a one goal game. With just 2:25 remaining in the 1-1 tie game, New York Rangers Dominic Moore broke the tie. The win gives the Rangers a 1-0 series lead over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Derek Stepan gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead on a goal that came with just 12.7 seconds remaining in the second period. Lightning forward Ondrej Palat tied the game on the power play 6:45 into the third period. The action was back and forth, with both goaltenders making brilliant saves. Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist finished with 23 saves, and Lightning goalie Ben Bishop made 28 saves in the loss. Bishop’s performance featured numerous game saving saves, especially in the first period.

New York coach Alain Vigneault downplayed the victory, and described it as one step along the way. “This is such a competitive league, so little separating the teams, I think at the end of the day that’s what you have to expect,” Vigneault said. “People talk about scoring maybe being down a bit, but look at the goaltending we’re seeing on the ice. I can’t comment that much on the Western Conference, but in the Eastern Conference all the teams, the goaltending’s just been phenomenal.

After struggling in the first period Lightning coach Jon Cooper said, “We’d like to have the first period back, no question”, “I thought we played tight. They were on us, we were probably a little bit fortunate. We got into the room tied. After that, it was anybody’s game. I thought there were big spurts in the game where we had them hemmed in. I don’t think we shot the puck enough, I don’t think we attempted enough shots.

The two teams get back at it Monday night as the Lightning look to tie up the series. Game 2 will be played in New York at Madison Square Garden.
