Quick Start for Rookie Keller

Arizona Coyotes center Clayton Keller, who led all rookies with nine goals and 15 points in 13 games, has been named the NHL’s Rookie of the Month for October.

Keller edged Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Mikhail Sergachev (4-7—11 in 13 GP), New Jersey Devils teammates Will Butcher (0-11—11 in 10 GP) and Jesper Bratt (4-6—10 in 10 GP), and Los Angeles Kings left wing Adrian Kempe (6-3—9 in 12 GP) for the honor.

Keller became the first Coyotes/Jets rookie to post nine goals in one calendar month since Teemu Selanne (20) in March 1993. He also became the first Coyotes/Jets rookie to collect 15 points in one calendar month since Selanne (20-7—27 in 14 GP) and Keith Tkachuk (6-9—15 in 14 GP) each accomplished the feat in March 1993.

Keller, who paced all rookies with 49 shots on goal, registered at least one point in 10 of his 13 October appearances, highlighted by a seven-game point streak to close the month (6-5—11) – the longest by any Coyotes/Jets rookie since Jan. 10-21, 2008 (Peter Mueller: 4-7—11 in 7 GP).

The seventh overall selection in the 2016 NHL Draft, Keller made his League debut March 27 after spending one season at Boston University, where he earned rookie of the year honors at the national, regional (New England) and league (Hockey East) levels. The 19-year-old Chesterfield, Mo., native has 9-8—17 in 16 total NHL outings.

Tampa Bay Lightning center Steven Stamkos, Tampa Bay Lightning right wing Nikita Kucherov and St. Louis Bluesleft wing Jaden Schwartz have been named the NHL’s “Three Stars” for the month of October.

FIRST STAR – STEVEN STAMKOS, C, TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING

Stamkos led the NHL with 18 assists and 24 points (6-18—24) in 13 games to power the Lightning (10-2-1, 21 points) into first place in the League standings. He registered at least one point in 12 of his 13 outings, highlighted by an 11-game streak to open the season (4-17—21) as well as eight multi-point performances. Stamkos, who picked up his 600th career point with 1-3—4 Oct. 21 vs. PIT, also paced the League with 10 power-play points (4-6—10). The 27-year-old Markham, Ont., native – who was limited to 17 games last season – ranks second in the NHL with 327 goals and 11th with 606 points since making his League debut in 2008-09 (599 GP).

SECOND STAR – NIKITA KUCHEROV, RW, TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING

Kucherov topped the NHL with 13 goals and placed second with 21 points to help the Lightning reach 10 wins faster than any other season in franchise history. He scored in 11 of his 13 contests, including seven straight games to open the campaign (8-5—13) – the longest such streak by any player since 1992-93. Kucherov also began the season with an 11-game point streak (12-7—19), making him and Stamkos the seventh set of teammates in League history – and first since 1992-93 – to achieve the feat. The 24-year-old Maykop, Russia, native paces the League with 53 goals and ranks second with 106 points over the past two seasons (87 GP).

THIRD STAR – JADEN SCHWARTZ, LW, ST. LOUIS BLUES

Schwartz placed third in the NHL with 8-9—17 in 13 games to lift the Blues (10‑2‑1, 21 points) into first place in the Western Conference. He collected at least one point in 11 of his 13 appearances, highlighted by five multi-point efforts and his third career hat trick Oct. 18 vs. CHI. Schwartz’ 17 total points were the most by any Blues player in October since 2000, when Pierre Turgeon posted an equal number (4-13—17 in 12 GP). The 25-year-old Wilcox, Sask., native has registered 97-132—229 in 331 career games since making his NHL debut in March 2011.

Hockey Fights Cancer™, a joint initiative between the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) and National Hockey League (NHL) as well as a program of the National Hockey League Foundation and NHL Foundation, begins today. The campaign, which unites the hockey community in support of cancer patients and their families, will feature ceremonies, observances, and fundraising efforts throughout the month of November. All 31 NHL® Member Clubs are designating one home game as the official Hockey Fights Cancer™ in-arena awareness night, with unique programming and partnerships with local cancer organizations.

New this season, Nicholle Anderson – wife of Ottawa Senators goaltender Craig Anderson – has been named an official Hockey Fights Cancer ambassador. Nicholle was diagnosed with Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma, a rare form of cancer that effects the nose and throat. Following several months of chemotherapy and radiation treatments, she officially became cancer-free in May 2017. As a Hockey Fights Cancer ambassador, Anderson will be sharing inspirational stories of those impacted by various forms of cancer who are currently undergoing treatment at American Cancer Society and Canadian Cancer Society lodges. These stories and videos will be available on NHL.com, NHL Social, and NHLPA Social platforms.

Esteemed national organizations American Cancer Society and Canadian Cancer Society have partnered with Hockey Fights Cancer. For cancer patients, a welcoming, caring environment can help meet the practical and emotional needs of those in treatment far away from home. This season, donations to the National Hockey League Foundation and NHL Foundation through HockeyFightsCancer.com, and proceeds from various campaign efforts, will go toward cancer care including cancer care facilities and supporting patients undergoing treatment. Since 1984, the American Cancer Society has provided more than five million nights of lodging to patients across the country in their Hope Lodge facilities. Today, the American Cancer Society operates more than 30 Hope Lodge facilities across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. In Canada, the Canadian Cancer Society has seven lodges across the country that provide meals, accommodations, transportation, workshops and activities, and support groups for hundreds of cancer patients each day.

For the fifth straight season, Hockey Fights Cancer and the Movember Foundation will partner to focus on men’s health. The Movember Foundation, the only global charity focused solely on men’s health – raising funds and awareness for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention – is asking NHL players to grow a moustache and encouraging fans to get involved. Fans can visit Monetwork.co/NHLto support their favorite NHL team or player, or participate by signing up and raising money for the Movember Foundation with their family and friends. Fans can also donate to the page of legendary moustache owner George Parros, NHL Senior Vice President of Player Safety and longtime supporter of the Movember Foundation.

Starting November 13, NHL Network’s NHL Now will feature sit-down interviews with members of the hockey community who have been affected by cancer. Nicholle Anderson will join NHL Network host Jamie Hersch to interview breast cancer survivor Diana Davidson, wife of Columbus Blue Jackets president John Davidson; Craig Snider, son of the late Ed Snider; and New Jersey Devils forward Jimmy Hayes, whose parents are cancer survivors. Throughout the month, NHL Network personalities will wear Hockey Fights Cancer ties and scarves on the air, and the network’s in-studio demo rink will feature lavender dashboards.

Fans can tune in to national Hockey Fights Cancer broadcast games on NBCSN, Nov. 14 (WSH @ NSH, 8pm ET) and Sportsnet, Nov. 25 (WSH @ TOR, 7pm ET).
