When the hockey world thought that they were dead and gone. The Carey Price less Montreal Canadians have inched within one game of the New York Rangers.
The game started with a bang when Canadians forward Brandon Prust blindsided Rangers forward Derek Stephan just 2:55 into the game. There was no call on the play, and tempers flared. On the next shift Prust was forced to answer for the hit when Rangers Derek Dorsett fought him. During the altercation Rangers forward Daniel Carcillo physically elbowed linesman Scott Driscoll in the jaw while he was being escorted to the penalty box. This earned him a game misconduct. The original hit that Prust put on Stephan will definitely be looked at by the NHL.
The Rangers Carl Hagelin was first to score. The opening goal came late in the first period. This was the only goal of the opening period. The Canadians answered this goal early in the second period. Andrei Markov fired one by Henrik Lundqvist to even up the score. From there on the game was very tight, with very few scoring chances. The goaltenders both came up big at various times late in the second but after two it was tied 1-1.
When everyone thought that the game would be going to overtime the Montreal Canadians Daniel Briere scored with just 2:33 to go in the game. Although Briere was credited with the goal, later replays showed that Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh had actually kicked the puck into his own net.
The Rangers pulled off another amazing finish, when Chris Kreider scored the tying goal with just 29 seconds remaining. With the net empty and an extra attacker on, the Rangers were able to create numerous scoring chances. Finally the Rangers Chris Kreider was able to get one past Canadians goalie Dustin Tokarski. The shot, much like the Canadians goal, went into the net off the leg of defenseman Alexei Emelin. With the score tied at 2-2, the game was headed to overtime.
The Canadians started the overtime with a flourish, and just 1:12 into overtime Alex Galchenyuk scored on a rebound shot from Tomas Plekanec.
