San Jose Sharks defenseman Marc-Ecouard Vlasic appeared to spear Ottawa Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson on Dec. 14th. It was behind the play and it was viscous. The spear did not hit Karlsson, but would have been devastating if it did. The league fined Vlasic $5000 for the play. Is this fair? What should the punishment be? The league does have its hands tied a bit because of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Where is the respect between players? I just do not understand why dangerous attacks like this continue.

The rule clearing states that a Spear should be called regardless if it hits the player or misses the player. I guess the question is – did the official see this or not?
