The Edmonton Oilers have reached a two-year contract extension with goaltender Ben Scrivens, the deal is reportedly worth $4.6 million.  That is 2.3 million a season, remarkably cheap for starting goalie, especially one that possesses the skill-set of Scrivens.

As a guy who has watched Edmonton Oilers hockey for over 25 years I can’t recall the team having a solid goaltending core and someone who I would call reliable between the pipes. Not having solid foundation in the goal is a good reason the Oilers have missed the playoffs the last eight seasons.

Scrivens was acquired by the Oilers a few weeks ago in a trade with the Los Angeles Kings. It came just minutes after the Oilers swung a deal with the Predators, sending Devan Dubnyk to Nashville. Dubynk, meanwhile, was placed on waivers by the Predators on Monday with the return of Pekka Rinne imminent.

I like what I have seen out of Scrivens in the small sample size I have witnessed so far. I have to admit, I am a bit biased when it comes to this player because I seen him play in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. However, based on the reported contract numbers the deal is more than fair. Moving forward, I believe the Edmonton Oilers will be rewarded handsomely. With confidence, I will say that the Edmonton Oilers continue to make you feel like they are an organization heading in an upward direction.
