SENATORS BLANK CANADIENS AT NHL100 CLASSIC 

Ottawa native Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored the game-winning goal at 14:55 of the second period and Craig Anderson stopped all 28 shots he faced to lead the Senators past the Canadiens in front of a sellout crowd of 33,959 at the 2017 Scotiabank NHL100 Classic at Lansdowne Park in Ottawa.  Senators captain Erik Karlsson (0-1—1), who recorded the primary assist on Pageau’s game-winning goal and finished the game with a plus-3 rating, set NHL regular-season outdoor game records for time on ice (32:55) and blocked shots (8).

Anderson recorded his second shutout of the season (40th career) and just the fourth shutout in the NHL’s 23 regular-season outdoor games to date. The others: Calgary’s Miikka Kiprusoff in the 2011 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic at McMahon Stadium (39 SV vs. MTL), Anaheim’s Jonas Hiller in the 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series at Dodger Stadium (36 SV at LAK) and Cam Talbot in the 2016 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic at Investors Group Field (31 SV at WPG).

The Senators improved to 2-0-0 in NHL outdoor games; Ottawa made its first such appearance in the 2014 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic at BC Place in Vancouver, picking up a 4-2 victory over the Canucks.  The Canadiens dropped to 2-2-0 outdoors. Montreal won the first such contest in League history – the 2003 Molson Canadian NHL Heritage Classic (4-3 W at EDM), lost the 2011 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic (4-0 at CGY) and won the 2016 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic (5-1 at BOS).

A sellout crowd of 33,959 attended the 2017 Scotiabank NHL100 Classic. Total attendance for the League’s 23 regular-season outdoor games now stands at 1,242,276 – an average of 54,012 per game.

Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson logged 32:55 in ice time tonight, the highest figure ever recorded for an NHL outdoor game. Karlsson entered the game ranked seventh among NHL players in average ice time per game this season (25:43). He also set a new NHL outdoor game mark for most blocked shots (eight).  Karlsson earned an assist on Jean-Gabriel Pageau‘s game-winning goal in the second period and recorded game highs in two other categories: shots on goal (seven) and plus-minus (+3).
Senators forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau opened the scoring, tallying what became the game-winning goal at 14:55 of the second period. The Ottawa native tallied his eighth goal in 18 career regular-season games against the Canadiens. He also tallied a hat trick against Montreal in Game 3 of the 2013 Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series (6-1 W), becoming the youngest player in Senators history with a multi-goal playoff game (20 years, 5 months).
Senators goaltender Craig Anderson made 28 saves in recording the fourth shutout in an NHL regular-season outdoor game. Anderson posted his second shutout of the 2017-18 season and the 40th of his career.
Today’s start time temperature of -10.8 degrees Celsius was the second-lowest recorded for an NHL regular-season outdoor game. The League’s first such game, the 2003 Molson Canadian NHL Heritage Classic (Montreal at Edmonton, Commonwealth Stadium), rates as the coldest with a start time temperature of ‑18°C.
The Senators improved to 11-13-7 (29 points), moving within three points of the Canadiens (14-15-4, 32 points). Ottawa snapped the Canadiens’ five-game winning streak against the Senators (OTT: 0-4-1), with Montreal having won its final three regular-season contests in 2016-17 and both prior meetings this season. The clubs will face off one more time in 2017-18: Feb. 4 at Montreal.
