Just when you thought that it would never happen, the Winnipeg Jets were able to sign young defenseman Jacob Trouba. Trouba signed a two-year bridge contract that will pay him $2.5 million this season and $3.5 million next season. This looks like a very team friendly deal, but may also be very attractive to trade suitors?

Trouba and his agent Kurt Overhardt fought a very hard fight with the Jets. At times it looked as though this deal would not get solved before the December 1 no play date. It did not look promising. Trouba had requested a trade, and was also standing very strong on contract negotiations. All signs pointed to the fact that it looked as though Trouba flat out did not want to play in Winnipeg.

Now that Trouba is signed the Jets can look forward to having their strong defenseman back on the ice. Trouba is a big part of the team, and his teammates were very welcoming and happy to have him back. But how long will he be back? After signing the contract he rescinded his trade request, but will the Jets still move him? Having a two-year, team friendly deal the trade chances increase. Trouba is highly sought after, and when you pair that with his contract, the list of teams interested would be very long. Is Kevin Cheveldayoff willing to go through this same situation in 18 months or will he be dealing Trouba in the near future?  My thoughts are that this will not happen this season, but is more likely to happen in the off-season.

  • Evander Kane may be on the way to the Minnesota Wild. Problem is the salary cap may just not let this happen.
  • The Winnipeg Jets are actively shopping forward Alex Burmistrov.
  • Movement may be in the works for Nail Yakupov again. He has been a healthy scratch for three consecutive games.
