Connor McDavid grew up just outside of Toronto. Tonight his Edmonton Oilers took on the Toronto Maple Leafs, and boy did McDavid show his comfort playing against his old hometown team. The rookie sensation put up two goals and three assists as the Oilers defeated the Maple Leafs 4-2 at Rexall Place in Edmonton.

This was McDavid’s first ever five-point game in his very young career. His real class showed when he could have completed the hat-trick, but he generously passed up an empty-net shot to set up his linemate Jordan Eberle for the goal. This assist for McDavid capped off his five points, but also solidified Jordan Eberle’s first career hat trick.

McDavid would have been a strong favorite for the Calder Trophy but his shoulder injury put that dream on hold. The good news is McDavid is back and he is making up for lost time. Tonight’s point outburst bolted him from 16th in rookie scoring to 10th. McDavid now has 9 goals, 14 assists for 23 points. The impressive part is that he has done this in just 19 games.
